See if you can find which level your animal from last week lives in! With this research, present it in a poster, have a go at drawing the animals and the levels of the rainforest. Be creative! You have until Friday 8th May to do this task. Email pictures of your poster to admin@stcolumbas.bradford.sch.uk

Tuesday 28th April

Good morning Hawthorn,

The weather has taken a bit of a turn,  but there are still so many fun things you can do indoors. Remember to keep exercising. I am going to try and do a 5K run today, which is something that I haven’t done in a long time.  Try and challenge yourselves!

At the end of your topic work last week I asked you to list 5 animals that you think would live in the rainforest. You need to choose one of the animals, or find another animal (maybe an animal that you don’t know). Research the animal to find out key facts about its diet, habitat (which level of the rainforest does it live on? Does it swing through the trees or crawl on the floor?), appearance and any interesting facts. Have a look at this fact file example, which is based on my favourite animal, the Sloth 🙂

Fact file example

Complete the plan and then write it up neatly.  I am really interested to see what animals you choose and the key facts you find out. Send a picture of your work to admin@stcolumbas.bradford.sch.uk .

Monday 27th April

Good evening Hawthorn,

I have been at school today and was so happy when I came home to see that so many children had emailed to show their work! Well done. Remember if you want to update us on anything that you have been doing at home, email admin@stcolumbas.bradford.ac.uk , we’d love to hear anything that you have to say.

Kacper- What brilliant topic work! You have done some in depth research into rainforests and why they are called rainforests! Well done.  You have used some key words to describe rainforests and have found some animals that live in the rainforest. What do these animals eat? Have they needed to adapt to the rainforest habitat? Keep up the good work, I look forward to seeing the topic work you do this week. I will post it tomorrow.

Maya- Wow! You have been doing lots of science work  based on one of the largest science centers in Poland! I can see that you and your sister have been enjoying the science experiments. I was really interested in your cold water vs hot water experiment- when both cold and warm water are stained and are put in two glasses, one on top of the other, the colour doesn’t mix. What a brilliant experiment! What did you learn from this experiment Maya? What does this tell us about temperature? Its lovely to see your sister practicing safe science  and using goggles! Keep up the good work girls 🙂

Jakub- what great topic work! You have fully completed the worksheet and found out what those three lines running through the Earth are called, the Equator, the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. These lines are really important when locating rainforests, can you find out why? You have used key words and have been able to explain why rainforests are called rainforests. Well done, keep up the good work.

Alexandra- You have created some clear instructions to making your vanilla cupcakes. I like your rhetorical question at the beginning of your instructions. Your cupcakes look yummy! I’d love to try one. Keep up the good work Alexandra.

Charlie- What lovely posters to show your appreciation for our key workers, its nice and clear to put in your window. In your email, it said that you have been reading The Demon Dentist by David Walliams. He is one of my favourite authors! What is the story about? Who are the main characters? It is nice to see you have been playing some games in the lovely weather 🙂

We really impressed with the work children have been doing. Keep it up 🙂

Stay safe, we are missing you all so much.

Good morning Hawthorn. I hope you all had a lovely day in the sunshine yesterday. I am looking forward to receiving all your instructions. Remember they need to be sent to admin@stcolumbas.sch.uk by Friday 24th April.

You also have some topic work to do based on our next topic Rainforests. This also needs to be sent to admin@stcolumbas.bradford.sch.uk by Friday 24th April.

Questions to ask about our topic, see if you can research the answers?

What is a rainforest?

What is the biggest rainforest in the world? Which country is it in?

Why are they called rainforests?

Have a go at using Google Maps or Google Earth to find out where rainforests are located in the world. You will notice a pattern. The worksheet attached contains a map of the world with the 3 lines on it. Name the lines and shade in where the rainforests are located. Challenge yourself and label some of the rainforests on the map.

Finish your topic work off by answering this: List 5 animals that you think would live in the rainforest?

Grammar Question of the Day!

Hope you are all staying hydrated and are keeping yourselves safe. Yesterday, I went back to school to do some work and decided to take a trip to our classroom and had a root through our nice, clean cupboard (Thank you Mrs Slater!). I found a statue of King Henry VIII!

I know that you loved learning about the Tudors so let’s see if you can remember some key facts.

  1. What words were used to describe Henry VIII?
  2. How many wives did Henry VIII have? Bonus point if you can remember what they are all called!
  3. What caused the reformation of the Church?
  4. What was the Spanish Armada? Bonus point if you can remember the famous Tudor Explorer who was involved in the Armada.
  5. Name three of the monarchs who ruled in the Tudor times.

I look forward to seeing if you’ve been able to answer the questions. Email your answers to admin@stcolumbas.bradford.sch.uk

Friday 20th March

Hello 5 Hawthorn!

Our book of the week has been Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. I have enjoyed reading this book so much that I have decided to read one of the Harry Potter books at home.

Today I have been reading in some unusual places, including, in my loft and in the garden, where my dog, Alfie, wanted to read too!

The Harry Potter book I have started to read is Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Have a look at the front cover.

Here are some questions we could ask about the front cover. Try and answer them:

Who are the people on the front cover? What clues are there that tell us who the people are?

What emotions are the people showing?

Why do you think there is fire in the picture?

What colours has JK Rowling used on the cover? Why do you think she chose these colours?

Email your answers and any other questions you can think of to admin@stcolumbas.bradford.sch.uk

I can’t wait to here what you have all been doing and how you are getting on with your home packs!

Miss Jackson

__________________________________________________________________________________________

Due to closure Year 5 have been sent home with a learning pack.  Details of content and expectations are below.

Maths worksheets based on prior learning of multiplication, division and fractions. Your child needs to complete one section of the sheets provided A,B or C.

A piece of writing to complete which will be based on previous learning so it is accessible for your child (this includes Steps to Success, research sheet, research and a planning tool).

Guided Reading Comprehensions- 2 each week

‘Topic’ homework which is based on your child’s upcoming topic in the Summer term,

A workbook for all work to be completed in and a pencil.

It is also expected that children login and complete 3 sessions of Spelling Shed (click here) and Times Table Rock Stars (click here) per week as they would if they were in school

We would also like you to stay in touch with us to let us know how you all are! You can forward things to admin@stcolumbas.bradford.sch.uk and let them know to pass your updates on to us. It would be great to see how you are all getting along with your packs too!

Thank you,
