Happy Friday Year 2!

Yesterday we learnt how to describe a minibeast that lives in the UK. Today we are going to look at minibeasts all around the world. Some minibeasts in different places in the world can’t be found in the UK.

Let’s look at a minibeast that is found in a different country.

Dung Beetle

Dung Beetles can be found all over the world, except Antarctica. They like to live in grasslands and forests. Dung beetles eat animal dung, which they roll into balls. They bury the ball to eat later.

Some minibeasts that are found in a different country look similar to minibeasts found in the UK. They are a part of the same family but look different.

 Blue Morpho Butterfly

This butterfly can be found in the tree tops of rainforests in South America. It likes to eat plant sap and fruit juices. It is one of the largest butterflies in the world.

Your task today is to research a minibeast that is found in a different country. The minibeast needs to be one that is similar to a minibeast found in the UK such as spider, butterfly, beetle, bee or stick insect. You need to find out;

  • What does the minibeast eat?
  • Where does the minibeast live?
  • How big is the minibeast?

Challenge- can you find out what the largest minibeast in the world is?

Thursday 7th May!

Good Morning Year 2! Your topic work today is all about the minibeasts we find in the UK. What minibeasts can you find in your back garden? How would you describe a minibeast? Let’s looks at a lady bird. How can we describe a ladybird?

Ladybirds have red wings and 7 black spots. Ladybirds have black legs.

Can you think of any other sentences to describe how a ladybird looks?

Your task is to match the UK minibeast to its description. Print the sheets off at home or use the pictures to match the minibeast to the correct description.

Once you have completed this activity, choose 2 minibeasts and write some sentences describing how they look.

CHALLENGE- research one of the minibeasts in the activity and find out some interesting facts about it.

Good Morning 2Cherry, from now on our reading tasks will be put up on a Thursday! I hope you enjoy your task, remember to choose the spice that suits you and to read the text carefully!

Spicy chilli – Can you read this description and answer the questions below?

Very hot chilli – Can you read this detailed description and answer the questions below?

Extra Maths questions!

Wednesday 6th May

RE Task

Spicy chilli task- think about the ‘Good News’ topic we looked at in RE. Think of as many different ways as you can to bring good news to others. As you think of each thing, use a skittle to create a rainbow around a circular plate, just like in the picture below. Pour warm water into the middle and watch what happens! Think about all of the ways you can bring good news and how this links to the rainbow.

Very hot chilli- Once you have completed the rainbow task, write a letter to Betsy, explaining how you can bring good news to others and why this is important. Could you also include information about what happened when you used the skittles and what you think this means and how this links to bringing people good news?

Please send your work and pictures of your skittles rainbows into our email address- admin@stcolumbas.bradford.sch.uk

Friday 1st May

Happy Friday Year 2!

We have started to learn about minibeasts. Yesterday, we found out what minibeasts are and which minibeasts can be found in the UK. Some minibeasts in the UK have to be looked after as there might not be many of the minibeast left, so they have to be protected. Zoos and Zookeepers look after these animals so that they are protected. Watch the video to see Miss Jackson’s friend Jess, who works at a zoo, talk about why we need to look after minibeasts and animals. Click the link below to watch the video.

Your task today is to find out what the 4 main capital cities are in the UK. Fill in the table below:

Next, find out if any of these capital cities have a zoo in them. Choose one of the zoos and see if they are looking after any minibeasts. Write some sentences that explains where the Zoo is in the UK and what minibeasts the zoo has.

Have a lovely day!

Miss Mackinney

Thursday 9th April – Good Afternoon 2Cherry!

I have had a few emails this week from children asking for some ideas of things they can do at home so I have put together a 10 ideas/activities for you!

  1. Write a diary. Right now it all seems a bit strange and unusual that we are at home and not at school (especially for the teachers) but the really exciting thing is that we are living through a major historical event. Some of you might grow up and become scientist or historians who study this period of time to make sure it doesn’t happen again! Who better to hear about this time than from someone living through it! BONUS – Can you use your neatest handwriting and send me a picture of it so I can read it. If I get enough sent in I will post a picture of my own diary page!!! How exciting.
  2. Bake something. Baking is super fun and also very educational as you have to follow instructions, measure and weigh. This helps our maths, science, english and you get something tasty at the end. BONUS – Can you write your own recipe for something you have made? Send them in and if it sounds super tasty I can post it for others to see and create.
  3. Create a plant fact file. Plants are fascinating, you know my favourite is cacti, can you create a fact file for your favourite plant? BONUS – Can you draw an image of it in different styles?
  4. Create a healthy meal plate. What do you need to eat and do to stay healthy? BONUS – Can you create an isolation day plan for someone to have a good day and stay healthy including exercises – food – drink and anything else you think would contribute to this?
  5. Read this comic strip – Can you identify any words you don’t know and find out the meaning? BONUS – Can you use these in a sentence?
  6. Look at the Bumble bee Conservation website (click here)  Can you complete the activities for your age? BONUS – Can you complete the activities for a different age?
  7. Sometimes being in the same place for a long time can feel a bit much. One way I like to chill out and exercise is by doing some Yoga. Here is a link to the ones we used to do in golden time! (click here) BONUS – Can you send a picture to me of you doing some Yoga for our class page?
  8. Linking to the last point, it is important to exercise but it is also important to sometimes mix up the exercise you do to keep your brain stimulated. A fun way to do this is through dancing, if you can’t come up with a routine yourself get a grown up to search ‘Just Dance Kids on Youtube’ and follow along. BONUS – Can you video your routine, this would be so lovely for me to watch and would make me super happy!
  9. Make natural art- Art and crafts is a popular way to keep busy. To mix things up, put the pencils and crayons to one side and look for natural art materials instead. Collect fallen leaves, petals and sticks and use them to make a picture or sculpture. You could even use the objects as ‘stampers’ or paintbrushes – dipping them in paint and rolling, brushing or stamping them on paper to create interesting patterns and effects. BONUS – Can you make a self portrait using natural items.
  10. Have a paper aeroplane competition. Compare different designs and see how well they fly and land. BONUS – Can you write up the results and create a table to show who won the most?

Look at all of the amazing photos this week! I have absolutely loved seeing what you are up to!

Emily – Your cooking looked so yummy! I am glad you are so happy to hear that I chose Dorothy as the name of our plant, I thought it was a super name! Your minibeast hunt sounded like a lot of fun, I can’t wait to hear what minibeasts you found and hear about their habitats! I read The Worst Witch when I was little, isn’t it brilliant 🙂

Kamil – WOW WOW WOW! I cannot believe how much reading and work you have been doing, I love all the photos you have sent me. The yoga looked very relaxing, I have been doing some at home as well and find it is a great opportunity to chill out and relax!

Declan – Those healthy homemade crisps look so yummy , I hope you will send the recipe so I can post it for the rest of 2Cherry to try! I can tell that you are working hard at home, keep it up and keep doing your best 🙂

Kate – What a lot of work you have been doing! I am so impressed, I can really tell you are working hard with mummy. Your pancakes looked so yummy they made me want some! What was the result of your salt experiment? I am interested to find out.

Ruby – The picture you sent is lovely! I was glad I got to see you when I was at school the other day whilst mummy was working for the NHS – a very important job! (It made me miss everyone in 2Cherry even more). Rocky looks super cute in the photo and I hope he is behaving well and not locking you out of the house again!!

Tomasz – You look like you have been doing a lot of hard work at home. I hope you are enjoying yourself and keep working hard. Send me some more pictures of the other things you have been up to!

Friday 3rd April – Good Afternoon 2Cherry!

I can’t believe it is April already! I have loved the pictures I have been sent this week, I will upload them tomorrow – our weekly Saturday update! That means you still have time today to send in any photos of the activities you have been up to this week, they make me so happy!!

Click here for some fun science activities! I’ve included some activities to do at home;

  • Play games with your senses: use a blindfold and try to identify objects just by touch, sound, smell and taste.
  • Go to a ‘habitat’ (for example: a pond in the park or a wooded area – socially distanced). Split an A4 page into two sections. On one side, list anything you can see that isn’t an animal (water, soil, trees, grass, etc.). Then look for as many animals as you can find and write a list of these on the other side of the page. Once you get home, discuss what parts of the habitat the animals rely on and why. Might some animals eat others to live? You may want to back this up with some research on the Internet or in the library.
  • Buy some seeds or bulbs and plant some in various different places (you could have one in a sunny spot in the garden, one in the shade and one in a container indoors). Water the seeds / bulbs according to instructions on the packet, making sure you give them all exactly the same amount of water at the same time of day (this is called carrying out a ‘fair test’).
  • Get out some baby photographs and see if you can tell who they are.
  • Start a collection: it could be anything – stones, shells, plastic dinosaurs – and sort it by size, colour, shape.
  • Make ice lollies and talk about what happens to water when it goes in the freezer

BONUS – Can you send me a picture of a plant and label it?

Friday 3rd April

WELL DONE TO GEORGE FROM 1 PINE- YOU ARE THE WINNER OF OUR KEY STAGE 1 DANCE COMPETITION AND YOUR EASTER EGG WILL BE DELIVERED NEXT WEEK! Thank you for all the entries we had, it was so tough deciding on a winner!

Monday 30th March – Good Evening 2Cherry!

As I was typing the date I had to check I had it right as I cannot believe it is almost the end of March already!!! Here is a picture of myself, my brother, sister mum and dad from a very long time ago, can you guess which one is me?

I went on a lovely walk today, remember it is really important to try and go for one piece of exercise (a run, walk or cycle) everyday! Make sure you are keeping safe and 2M away from people that do not live in your house.

When you exercise you release something called endorphins which make you feel happy, I have been doing Joe Wicks each morning at 9 to start my day off. Here are some pictures to prove it!!!

I hope you are keeping well and doing some fabulous work, I have had so many wonderful pictures which I will be uploading in the next few days, keep an eye out!

Miss you all lots, Miss Mackinney

Tuesday 24th March! Good Evening 2Cherry!

Goodness what a busy day I have had today. I woke up and did some stretching and yoga (I followed the yoga from a youtube video – click here – to get the yoga we do in class!)

I then had breakfast, a bowl of crunchy nut cornflake, and then I did ANOTHER workout. My legs hurt so much now! I made lunch, watched some TV, planned some guided reading, played mario karts and then made dinner!! A very busy day…

I am just updating you all because if you click here you can access a load of free Audio-books! All of the children books are free to listen to, let me know which ones you listen to – can you remember the special word I taught you for when you enjoy something and you think someone else will as well?

Keep safe,

Miss Mackinney 🙂

I have an extra bonus question – If you email me the correct answers at admin@stcolumbas.bradford.sch.uk I will add you to my online sticker chart!

Today I bought a new flower for us to observe over the coming weeks, I also re-potted my cacti – ouch! Tomorrow I will upload a picture of the flower and my cacti, can you draw and label it once you see the picture? I need a name for the plant, please submit your suggestions and we can vote!

Missing you all loads and can’t wait to hear from you through your emails 🙂 Make sure you are washing your hands for 20 seconds and often through the day. I would love to see some pictures of what you’re up to!

Sunday 22nd March – Good Afternoon 2Cherry,

I thought I would share with you a lovely prayer my priest sent me this morning for Mothers Day.

All-loving God, we give you thanks and praise for mothers young & old.

We pray for young mothers, who give life and count toes and tend to our every need; May they be blessed with patience and tenderness to care for their families and themselves with great joy.

We pray for our own mothers who have nurtured and cared for us; May they continue to guide us in strong and gentle ways.

We remember mothers who are separated from their children because of war, poverty, or conflict; May they feel the loving embrace of our God who wipes every tear away.

We pray for women who are not mothers but still love and shape us with motherly love. Finally we pray for mothers no longer with us. May God give them, light, happiness and peace.

Amen

Friday 20th March – Hello 2Cherry!

My aunty is a vet in Falmouth, Cornwall. She has contacted me to help her work out how many paws are in the photos below, the vets can’t agree on the answer! Can you work it out and email admin to let me know? What is the easiest way to work out the answer, can you group them?

Can you find where Cornwall is on a map? BONUS – Can you find Falmouth?

Have you got any pets at home? I  would love to see them, it makes me really happy when I can see loads of cute animals! If you could design your own new animal what would it look like? Draw it out in your book and tell me some interesting facts about it. I will post a picture of my made up animal next week!

Here is a picture of me and my dog Wiggy, can you include him in your equation?

Miss you all lots, I can’t wait to hear all about what you have been up to, why don’t you keep a diary?
